ALMA CORSO is located on the corner of Canelones and Convention, within the central area of Montevideo and in direct contact with Barrio Sur, the Old City, the Rambla and the so-called Barrio de las Artes. It is an environment with a strong urban identity, marked by the proximity of the Río de la Plata, the tradition of candombe, the presence of cultural spaces and a growing gastronomic and hotel offer.
Designed by Carlos Ott, the project is developed on a plot of land with more than 50 meters of frontage and is made up of ten residential levels, 57 apartments and a commercial premises on the ground floor. Its scale and corner position allow it to assume a recognizable presence within the urban landscape, while favoring lighting and visuals from the units.
The proposal was conceived to respond to contemporary ways of life, combining functionality, comfort and architecture with a defined character. The residences seek to take advantage of their relationship with the exterior and with the different orientations of the land, introducing natural light and perspectives towards the city in the spaces of daily use.
The project is part of the renovation process that the southern sector of downtown Montevideo is going through, where historic buildings, recycled constructions and new interventions coexist within a diverse fabric. Instead of being proposed as an isolated piece, ALMA CORSO incorporates this heterogeneous condition and translates it into a residential proposal connected to the cultural activity, services and urban life of its surroundings.
The presence of a commercial premises on the ground floor contributes to maintaining an active relationship with the street and reinforcing the mixed character of the area. The building thus offers an alternative for those seeking to live near the main cultural and institutional points of Montevideo, without giving up contemporary spaces and carefully resolved architecture.
ALMA CORSO synthesizes the encounter between Carlos Ott's international career and the identity of one of the most historic sectors of the city. It is a project that looks to the future without separating itself from the energy, culture and urban memory that define Barrio Sur.
